Information Horizons Mapping is a research method developed by Diane Sonnenwald and colleagues, formalized in their 2001 paper in The New Review of Information Behaviour Research, for studying how people seek information within a specific context. Grounded in Sonnenwald's theory of information horizons — the idea that, in any given situation, an individual perceives a 'horizon' of information resources (people, documents, tools, systems) that they may consult — the method asks participants to draw a map of those sources for a particular information need and to explain it. By analyzing which sources appear, how close or central they are placed, how they relate to one another, and why some are included or excluded, researchers gain a situated, participant-centered picture of information-seeking behaviour that goes beyond simple source-use surveys.

When to use it

Use Information Horizons Mapping when you want a situated, participant-centered understanding of which information sources people perceive, prefer and avoid in a specific context, and why — especially when source-use surveys feel too thin or impose the researcher's categories. It is well suited to studying information seeking in defined situations (health decisions, education choices, workplace tasks, settling in a new community), to comparing source horizons across social groups, and to surfacing human and informal sources that formal channels overlook. It is less appropriate for large-scale prevalence estimation, for fully de-contextualized questions, or where participants cannot anchor on a concrete situation. Because it depends on drawing and reflective explanation, it requires participants willing and able to externalize their thinking, and it pairs naturally with interviews and the critical incident technique.

What is an 'information horizon'?

It is the set of information resources — people, documents, websites, tools, institutions — that an individual perceives as available and relevant within a particular context or situation. Sonnenwald's theory holds that people do not weigh every conceivable source but operate within a perceived horizon shaped by their situation, social network and setting. The same person has different horizons in different situations. The mapping method makes this horizon visible by asking participants to draw and explain the sources they would (and would not) consult for a specific information need.

How is an information horizon map created and analyzed?

The researcher first fixes a concrete information-seeking situation, then asks the participant to draw themselves and place around them the sources they would turn to, indicating how close, central or connected each is. A think-aloud and interview probe why each source is included or excluded and how they relate. Analysis reads the spatial structure — closer and more central sources signal stronger preference and use — together with the participant's stated reasoning, and individual maps can be aggregated to compare source horizons across roles or social groups within the same context.

How does horizon mapping differ from a source-use survey?

A source-use survey hands participants a predefined list of sources and asks how often they use each, imposing the researcher's categories and capturing only frequency. Horizon mapping instead lets participants define their own information landscape for a real situation, showing which sources come to mind, how they are prioritized spatially, which are deliberately excluded, and the reasoning behind all of this. It thus captures perception, preference, relationships and avoidance in context — a richer, more situated picture than a frequency checklist can provide, at the cost of being more labor-intensive and smaller in scale.
