Fungsi item diferensial polytomous mendeteksi apakah suatu item tes atau survei dengan lebih dari dua kategori respons berurutan (misalnya, skala tipe Likert, item kredit parsial) berfungsi berbeda antar kelompok seperti gender, etnisitas, atau latar belakang bahasa, setelah mengontrol sifat laten yang diukur.
