ניתוח מסמכים מבוסס-שטח הוא אסטרטגיה איכותנית שבה החוקר נכנס לסביבה אמיתית – בית ספר, מרפאה, ארגון או קהילה – ואוסף, מאמת ומנתח באופן שיטתי מסמכים המיוצרים ומשמשים שם באופן טבעי. בשונה מניתוח מסמכים מבוסס-ספרייה או ארכיון, הקשר השטח הוא אינטגרלי: החוקר צופה כיצד מסמכים מתפקדים בפועל, מי מייצר וקורא אותם, ואיזו עבודה ארגונית או תרבותית הם מבצעים. גישה זו נפוצה במחקר אתנוגרפי, מחקרי מקרה ומחקר מוסדי.
