מחקר מקרה הוא חקירה ממוקדת והקשרית של מקרה יחיד (או מספר קטן של מקרים) לבחינת תופעה לעומק. מחקר מקרה, שפותח באופן שיטתי על ידי רוברט ק. יין (1984) ורוברט א. סטייק (1995), משתמש במקורות נתונים מרובים (ראיונות, תצפיות, מסמכים, חפצים) כדי להפיק הבנה הוליסטית של תופעה מוגדרת בהקשר העולם האמיתי שלה.
