אלגוריתם חיפוש A*, שפותח על ידי פיטר ה. הארט, נילס י. נילסון וברטראם רפאל בשנת 1968, הוא אלגוריתם אופטימלי למציאת מסלולים המשלב את יתרונותיו של אלגוריתם דיקסטרה עם הנחיה היוריסטית. הוא מוצא ביעילות את המסלול הקצר ביותר על ידי איזון בין המרחק בפועל מההתחלה למרחק המוערך מהיעד.
