Deviation

The difference between an observed value and a reference point, most commonly the arithmetic mean: d_i = x_i − x̄. Deviations are the building blocks of variance and standard deviation. Their signed sum equals zero; absolute or squared deviations form the basis of mean absolute deviation and variance respectively.
