SummaryGender Analysis in Development is the systematic examination of the different roles, responsibilities, resources, and constraints of women and men, and of the relations between them, in order to understand how development interventions affect and are affected by gender. Spanning a family of frameworks — the Harvard Analytical Framework, Caroline Moser's gender-planning approach, and Naila Kabeer's Social Relations Approach — it provides comparative tools to surface inequalities, distinguish practical from strategic needs, and design interventions and gender-mainstreaming strategies grounded in sex-disaggregated evidence. The capability approach, developed by Amartya Sen and given a concrete list-based form by Martha Nussbaum, evaluates individual well-being and social arrangements in the space of capabilities — the real freedoms people have to achieve the kinds of lives they have reason to value — rather than in the space of income, resources, or subjective utility. Measurement under the approach means identifying valued functionings, the resources and conversion factors that turn resources into functionings, and the freedom people enjoy to choose among them.
