The Wheelchair Skills Training Program (WSTP) is a structured, evidence-based intervention that teaches wheelchair users the individual skills needed for safe, independent mobility, from basic maneuvers to advanced ones such as curb negotiation and wheelies. Developed by R. Lee Kirby and colleagues at Dalhousie University as the training companion to the Wheelchair Skills Test, the WSTP applies motor-learning principles — goal setting, structured practice, feedback, and progression — and was shown in randomized controlled trials (MacPhee et al. 2004; Best et al. 2005) to produce clinically significant, safe gains in wheelchair-skill capacity. It pairs assessment and training in a single closed loop: test, train the deficits, retest.

When to use it
Use the WSTP when a wheelchair user has identifiable skill deficits that limit safe, independent mobility and you want a structured, evidence-based way to remediate them — in initial rehabilitation, community reintegration, or research on mobility interventions. It applies to manual and powered wheelchair users with corresponding skill sets and is naturally paired with the Wheelchair Skills Test for pre-post evaluation. It is less appropriate when the limiting factor is the device rather than the user's skill, when the user cannot safely attempt training even with progression, or when the relevant mobility goals fall outside the standardized skill hierarchy the program is built around.

How does the WSTP relate to the Wheelchair Skills Test?
They are two halves of the same Wheelchair Skills Program: the Wheelchair Skills Test measures which skills a user can perform and how safely, and the WSTP trains the skills the test identifies as deficits. The test is administered before training to set goals and establish a baseline, and again afterward to quantify improvement. Using the same standardized skill hierarchy for both assessment and training is what makes the program a coherent closed loop and allows objective pre-post evaluation of the intervention's effect.
What evidence supports the WSTP?
Randomized controlled trials provide the core evidence. MacPhee and colleagues (2004) found that wheelchair users undergoing initial rehabilitation who received the WSTP improved their wheelchair-skill scores significantly more than controls, and Best and colleagues (2005) showed similar efficacy, safety, and practicality in community-based manual wheelchair users. These trials demonstrated clinically meaningful gains that were largely retained and achieved without significant adverse events, which is why the WSTP is described as an evidence-based intervention rather than an informal training routine.
Why use motor-learning principles instead of just demonstrating skills?
Wheelchair skills are motor skills, and decades of motor-learning research show that durable skill acquisition depends on structured, repeated practice with appropriate feedback and graded progression from easier to harder variants, rather than one-off demonstration. The WSTP applies these principles deliberately, which is what produces reliable, retained improvements. Informal demonstration may show a user a technique but rarely builds the consolidated capacity that supervised, progressive practice does, especially for demanding and safety-critical skills like curb descents and wheelies.
