Et selvovervåget konvolutionelt neuralt netværk (CNN) lærer kraftfulde visuelle repræsentationer fra ikke-mærkede billeder ved at løse prætekstopgaver – såsom kontrastiv instansdiskrimination eller forudsigelse af maskerede patches – og finjusterer derefter på et lille mærket datasæt. Denne tilgang reducerer dramatisk afhængigheden af store annoterede datasæt, samtidig med at de rumlige trækudtrækningsstyrker ved konvolutionelle arkitekturer bevares.
