Formalized across twentieth-century forestry literature (notably by Husch, Beers, and Kershaw), basal area serves as a key indicator of forest density, biomass accumulation, and competitive pressure, essential for yield prediction and stand management planning.	Forest inventory sampling is a systematic approach to estimate forest characteristics such as timber volume, species composition, and biomass by surveying a representative subset of trees rather than conducting exhaustive censuses.
