ResuméThe Impact on Participation and Autonomy (IPA) scale is a validated, patient-centered measure designed to quantify how chronic conditions or disabilities affect an individual's autonomy and participation in five key life domains: autonomy, mobility, occupation, social relations, and recreation. Developed in the Netherlands by Cardol and colleagues, it operationalizes the WHO handicap concept (now called 'participation restriction') and is widely used in rehabilitation, chronic disease management, and policy evaluation across Europe. The Assessment of Life Habits (LIFE-H) is a comprehensive, interview-based measure that evaluates participation in 11 key life domains—from basic self-care and nutrition to work, recreation, and community engagement. Developed in Quebec by Fougeyrollas, Noreau, and colleagues, LIFE-H operationalizes the ICF concept of 'participation' through a detailed assessment of how individuals accomplish (or struggle with) the habits and roles essential to life in their community.
