ResuméCultivation analysis is the research method underlying cultivation theory, which holds that long-term, cumulative exposure to television gradually shapes viewers' conceptions of social reality. Developed by George Gerbner and Larry Gross in the 1970s as part of the Cultural Indicators project, it combines a systematic content analysis of recurring media messages with survey comparisons of heavy versus light viewers to estimate how much television 'cultivates' a shared, often distorted, view of the world.Content analysis is a systematic research technique for reducing text, visual, or media material into coded categories so that patterns can be counted, compared, and interpreted. Formalised by Klaus Krippendorff in his widely cited methodology textbook (latest edition 2018), the method sits at the boundary of qualitative and quantitative inquiry: it imposes structured, replicable coding on inherently meaning-laden material.
