Eye-Tracking in Media Research

Eye-tracking measures where, when, and for how long people look at media, providing a moment-by-moment record of visual attention that self-report cannot capture. By recording fixations and saccades and aggregating them over defined areas of interest, communication researchers infer what in an advertisement, news page, website, or video draws attention and how visual processing unfolds.

When to use it

Use eye-tracking when your question concerns visual attention to media — what is noticed, in what order, and for how long — and you need objective, fine-grained data rather than fallible self-reports. It is well suited to advertising and packaging research, news and web usability, visual framing, warning-label and disclosure studies, and any design where attention allocation matters. It assumes attention can be validly inferred from gaze (the eye–mind link) and that AOIs are meaningful. It is less appropriate when the construct of interest is covert attention (which can shift without eye movement), when ecological validity demands naturalistic free viewing that is hard to control, or when small samples and individual differences limit generalization — and it measures where people look, not why or what they conclude.

What is the difference between a fixation and a saccade?

A fixation is a brief period (often 200–300 ms) during which the eye is relatively still and visual information is taken in; fixations are where processing happens. A saccade is the rapid ballistic movement between fixations, during which vision is largely suppressed so little new information is acquired. Eye-tracking analysis classifies the raw gaze stream into these events, because counting and timing fixations on areas of interest is what reveals attention allocation.

Does looking at something mean a person processed it?

Not necessarily. Fixation on an element indicates overt attention was directed there, which is usually a prerequisite for processing, but it does not guarantee comprehension, encoding, or persuasion — people can look without absorbing, or absorb peripherally without fixating. This is why eye-tracking is most powerful when combined with downstream measures like recall, recognition, or attitude change, which test whether attended content was actually processed.

Are areas of interest defined before or after data collection?

They should be defined a priori, based on the research question and stimulus design, before examining the gaze data. Drawing or adjusting AOIs after seeing where people happened to look lets the data shape the hypotheses and inflates false-positive findings. Preregistering AOIs and metrics, as in any confirmatory study, keeps the analysis honest; exploratory AOI analysis is legitimate but should be labeled as such.
