Use elaboration likelihood analysis when you want to understand not just whether a message persuades but how — through argument scrutiny or peripheral shortcuts — and for whom and under what conditions. It is ideal for designing and testing persuasive communication in health, advertising, political, and risk contexts, and for predicting attitude durability, since centrally formed attitudes are more persistent and resistant. It assumes you can manipulate argument quality, peripheral cues, and elaboration independently, and that elaboration is validly induced (verified via thought-listing). It is less appropriate when you cannot construct genuinely strong versus weak arguments, when motivation/ability cannot be varied, or when the question is about message prevalence rather than processing — and the strict route dichotomy can oversimplify continuous, mixed processing.

Is the ELM falsifiable given that variables can play multiple roles?

This is a recognized critique: because a variable like source credibility can act as a peripheral cue, an argument, or a determinant of elaboration depending on context, the model can seem able to accommodate any result after the fact. The defense is methodological discipline — specifying in advance, ideally via preregistration, which role each variable plays and what interaction pattern would confirm or disconfirm the prediction, so the route is tested rather than assigned post hoc.
