Pioneered by Malinowski in the 1920s and developed in anthropology, the method has been adopted across sociology, education, health sciences, and organizational research. The researcher functions as both insider (participating in group activities) and outsider (maintaining analytical distance), generating thick description—rich accounts of context, behavior, and meaning that reveal how people actually live and interact.	In-depth interviews are a qualitative research method in which a trained interviewer conducts one-on-one conversations with individual participants using open-ended questions to explore their experiences, perspectives, and understandings of a phenomenon. Developed in the 1950s by Rogers and Hyman, the method varies along a spectrum from structured (standardized question sets) to semi-structured (guided topic areas with flexibility) to unstructured (emergent, conversational).
