The Price Index measures how strongly a field draws on recent literature by computing the percentage of its references that point to work published within the last few years. Derek de Solla Price, the founder of modern scientometrics, observed that the sciences differ sharply in how immediate their referencing is: hard sciences cite a tight cloud of recent papers at the research front, while humanities scholarship cites a long, even spread of older works. In his 1965 Science paper on the networks of scientific papers he documented this concentration of references on recent years, and in his 1970 essay distinguishing hard science, soft science, technology, and nonscience he formalized the index that now bears his name. Defined as the share of references no older than about five years, the Price Index is a citing-side companion to obsolescence measures: where the cited half-life looks at how the literature ages, the Price Index looks at how recency-focused the citing behavior is.

When to use it

Use the Price Index when you want a citing-side measure of how recency-focused a field, journal, or set of papers is, for instance to position a discipline on the spectrum from research-front to archival scholarship, to compare referencing behavior across fields, or to track how a field's frontier orientation changes over time. It complements cited-side aging measures: the Price Index asks how recent the references are, while the cited half-life asks how the literature is used as it ages. The index requires complete reference-year data and a population large enough for a stable proportion. It is less informative for individual short papers with few references, and the five-year convention should be applied consistently or its sensitivity checked. Like other temporal indicators, it describes citation dynamics rather than quality, so it should not be read as a performance score.

What does the Price Index measure?

It measures the percentage of a body of references that point to recent literature, conventionally work published within the last five years. It is a citing-side recency measure: it characterizes how strongly a paper, journal, or field draws on the research front versus older, archival work. Price introduced it to distinguish hard sciences, which cite a tight cloud of recent papers and have high indices, from the humanities, which cite an enduring literature and have low indices. It is a proportion, so it ranges from zero to one hundred percent.

How is the Price Index different from the cited half-life?

They look at aging from opposite sides. The Price Index is computed from the references a body of work makes and asks what fraction of those references are recent. The cited half-life is computed from the citations a body of work receives and asks the median age of the cited documents. One is citing-side and forward-looking toward the frontier; the other is cited-side and describes how a literature is used as it ages. Together they give a fuller picture of a field's temporal dynamics than either alone.

Why five years?

Five years is Price's convention for the research-front window, chosen because it cleanly separated frontier-focused fields from archival ones in his analyses. It is not a fundamental constant, and analysts sometimes use other thresholds; what matters is that the same window be applied consistently when comparing units, and that the sensitivity of conclusions to the window be checked. The substantive finding, that hard sciences have far higher recent-reference shares than the humanities, is robust to reasonable choices of window.
