Are these half-lives comparable across fields?
Only with caution. Absolute half-lives reflect a field's intrinsic citation speed: fast fields like biomedicine have short half-lives on both sides, slow fields like mathematics have long ones. So neither half-life nor the raw asymmetry should be compared across disciplines without accounting for these baselines. Within a field, however, differences in the asymmetry meaningfully distinguish journals by temporal role. As with all aging measures, the half-lives describe citation dynamics and should not be read as indicators of journal quality.
