The concentric zone model, formulated by sociologist Ernest Burgess of the Chicago School in the 1920s, describes the city as a set of concentric rings of land use and social structure expanding outward from a central business district. Each ring — from the commercial core, through a transitional zone of factories and tenements, to successive rings of workers' homes, better residences, and commuters — represents a stage in the city's outward growth. Published in the 1925 volume The City, it was the first influential model of urban spatial structure and treated the city through the lens of human ecology, with zones competing and invading one another like species in an ecosystem.

When to use it

Use the concentric zone model as a conceptual and pedagogical framework for thinking about how land use and social structure vary with distance from a city centre, and as a baseline against which to compare a city's observed spatial structure. It is most illuminating for the rapidly growing, single-centred industrial cities of its era and for introducing the logic of urban ecology and outward growth. It is least applicable to modern polycentric, car-oriented, or planned cities, to cities shaped strongly by terrain, transport corridors, or history, and to any task requiring quantitative prediction, where bid-rent or density-gradient models offer sharper, testable formulations.

What are the zones in the Burgess concentric model?

From the centre outward, Burgess identified five rings: the central business district (the commercial core); the zone in transition, where industry encroaches on deteriorating housing occupied by recent immigrants and the poor; the zone of independent workers' homes; the zone of better residences for the middle class; and the commuter zone of suburbs and satellite towns at the periphery. Social status and housing quality broadly increase with distance from the centre, while density and the share of recent arrivals decrease.

Why is the model called 'urban ecology'?

Because the Chicago School explicitly borrowed concepts from biological ecology to explain the city. Burgess treated urban zones like competing species in an ecosystem: groups and land uses compete for territory, and as the centre grows it 'invades' the adjacent zone, whose occupants are displaced outward in a process of 'succession'. Distance from the centre, competition, and invasion-succession give the model its dynamic, organism-like character, which is why it is described as a human-ecology or urban-ecology model rather than a purely economic one.

Is the concentric zone model still valid today?

Not as a literal description of modern cities. It was built on 1920s Chicago — a single-centred, rapidly growing industrial city served by mass transit and walking — and modern cities are often polycentric, car-oriented, planned, or shaped strongly by terrain and history, producing sectoral or multi-nuclei patterns instead of clean rings. Its enduring value is conceptual: it pioneered the systematic study of urban spatial structure, introduced the ecological logic of competition and succession, and still serves as an idealised baseline against which the real, messier geography of a city can be compared.
