A triangulated structured interview applies the triangulation principle — using multiple independent sources, methods, or perspectives to cross-validate findings — to the structured interview format. The researcher administers the same fixed set of questions across different respondent groups, time points, or complementary data sources, then systematically compares the results to confirm, qualify, or explain discrepancies. Use a triangulated structured interview when accuracy and credibility of structured self-report data are critical and a single interview wave would be insufficient to rule out systematic bias (e.g., social desirability, recall error, or single-source confounding). Appropriate for evaluations, policy research, and applied studies where decisions depend on the reliability of respondent accounts. Also valuable in multi-site or multi-stakeholder research where the same constructs must be measured from different perspectives. Do not use when only one respondent category or time point is available, when the budget does not allow for multiple data collection waves or sources, or when the research question requires in-depth exploratory insight rather than cross-validated measurement — in that case a semi-structured or phenomenological approach is more suitable.

Without that convergence analysis, you have multi-group data collection, not triangulation.

Can I triangulate using a structured interview and a survey questionnaire?

Yes — this is method triangulation (combining two different instruments) rather than data-source triangulation (same instrument, different respondent groups). Both are legitimate strategies and can be combined. Using a structured interview alongside a self-completion questionnaire covering the same constructs is common in health and evaluation research and can reveal whether mode of administration affects responses.

How do I handle persistent divergence between sources?

Persistent divergence is a finding, not a failure. Report it transparently and examine possible explanations: Are the two respondent groups answering from different roles or vantage points? Is there social desirability pressure in one group but not the other? Does the divergence vary systematically across subgroups? These explanations often yield substantive insights that a single-source design would have missed.

Does triangulation eliminate the need for a large sample?

No. Triangulation addresses the threat of single-source bias, not the threat of sampling error. Each respondent group or data source still needs a sample large enough to support the inferences you want to draw from it. Triangulation and adequate sample size are complementary, not interchangeable, requirements.

Is this method appropriate for exploratory research?

Only partially. The standardized question format of a structured interview is best suited to confirmatory or descriptive purposes where the key constructs are already defined. For exploratory research — where you do not yet know what questions to ask — a semi-structured or unstructured interview allows the necessary flexibility. Triangulation can be applied to semi-structured interviews, but the analysis approach differs.
