It is especially effective for younger populations and in low- and middle-income countries where smartphones are the primary internet device. Not quite. A mobile survey is specifically designed for mobile viewing — single-column layout, large tap targets, short item blocks, and minimal scrolling. A standard web survey viewed on a phone without adaptation is technically possible but typically produces high breakoff rates and poor user experience. The distinction matters: mobile-optimized design is a deliberate methodological choice, not just a rendering accident.

How does mobile survey length affect completion rates?

Research consistently shows that completion rates decline more steeply with length on mobile than on desktop. A survey that achieves acceptable completion at fifteen minutes on desktop may see dramatically higher breakoff at ten minutes on mobile. The practical guideline is to target under ten minutes and to pilot-test on actual mobile devices with representative users before wide deployment.

Can I use Likert scales in a mobile survey?

Yes, but simplified. Standard five- or seven-point Likert scales work on mobile when displayed as vertical radio buttons or large tap targets, one item per screen.
