Mobile Field Notes is a data collection technique in which researchers use smartphones, tablets, or wearable devices to record observations, reflections, photographs, audio, or video in real time during fieldwork. By capturing data at the moment and place of occurrence, the method reduces recall bias and enables richer, contextually anchored documentation compared with traditional pen-and-paper notes written retrospectively.

When to use it
Use Mobile Field Notes when fieldwork requires real-time, in-situ documentation and when multimedia evidence (photographs, audio) will materially strengthen the analytical record — for example, in ethnographic studies of public spaces, workplace practices, educational settings, or community events. The method is particularly well-suited to mobile or 'go-along' research designs where the researcher moves with participants through their environment. It is less appropriate when overt device use would be intrusive, ethically problematic, or disruptive to the social setting under study; in such cases, traditional written notes taken discreetly or immediately after observation are preferable. It also requires participants' informed consent for any recording or photography.

Otter.ai handles voice-to-text transcription in the field. The best choice depends on whether the priority is multimedia richness, searchability, or seamless integration with the analysis workflow.
How do mobile field notes differ from experience sampling?
Experience sampling (ESM) prompts participants to self-report their experiences at random or scheduled intervals — the data source is the participant. Mobile field notes are produced by the researcher observing the field — the data source is the researcher's own observations and reflections. Both use mobile devices, but the roles, data types, and analytic logic are distinct.
Can I photograph participants without asking each time?
No. Photographs of identifiable individuals require informed consent, typically secured before fieldwork begins and reiterated when specific images are taken. Blanket consent obtained at study entry may cover ongoing photography in some settings, but researchers should review their ethical approval carefully and err on the side of asking.
Are mobile field notes appropriate for covert observation?
Covert observation is itself ethically controversial and requires specific ethical approval. Mobile devices add an additional layer of concern because photographing or audio-recording without consent compounds the ethical issues. Covert mobile field notes should only be considered in very exceptional circumstances with full institutional ethical clearance.
How do I manage the large volume of multimedia data?
Establish a clear file-naming convention from day one (e.g., YYYYMMDD_site_theme), use a dedicated folder structure, and back up to an encrypted cloud or institutional repository after every fieldwork session. Prioritise annotation over accumulation: a smaller set of richly annotated images is more analytically valuable than thousands of unannotated files.
