What is the iceberg profile, and does every athlete need it?

The iceberg profile—high Vigor, low Tension/Depression/Anger/Fatigue/Confusion—correlates with elite performance in many sports. However, individual profiles vary; some high performers show moderate Tension (which can facilitate focus), and some recreational athletes have non-iceberg profiles. Use iceberg as a reference, not a rigid rule. Track your athlete's personal baseline and trajectory.

Can POMS distinguish mood from physical fatigue?

No. Elevated Fatigue subscale scores reflect subjective fatigue perception and could reflect sleep loss, dehydration, illness, or overtraining. Combine POMS with objective data: training load metrics, sleep logs, heart rate variability, resting heart rate. A coach noticing persistent high Fatigue should integrate multiple sources.

How often should I administer POMS?

Frequency depends on purpose. For pre-competition monitoring: administer 1–2 hours before each major competition. For training season tracking: weekly or every 2–3 weeks. For research or intervention studies: baseline, mid-intervention, and post-intervention, plus follow-up. Single administrations provide limited insight; minimum 3 time points recommended for trend analysis.

Are POMS scores comparable across different time frames (e.g., 'right now' vs. 'past week')?

No. Standard instructions are critical. Always specify the same time frame across repeated assessments ('right now' for state, 'past week' for trait). Different instructions yield different score magnitudes and reduce comparability. Document time frame in all records.

Does POMS diagnose clinical depression or anxiety?

No. POMS measures mood dimensions in non-clinical populations. Elevated Depression or Tension subscales indicate mood disturbance requiring follow-up, but do not constitute a clinical diagnosis. Refer athletes with persistent mood symptoms to mental health professionals for diagnostic evaluation.

What are appropriate norms for interpreting scores?

Use sport-specific norms when available (elite athletes, collegiate athletes, recreational exercisers). The original manual provides age and gender norms; POMS-2 includes modern, diverse athlete samples. Applying psychiatric clinical norms to athletes is inappropriate and inflates perceived psychopathology. Consult published sport psychology research for your athlete population.
