Why is a time-budget diary better than just asking how often someone plays sport?

Stylized recall questions invite guessing, rounding, and over-reporting of socially approved behavior like exercise, and they miss brief or incidental activity entirely. The diary asks the respondent to reconstruct a specific day as a chain of episodes that must add up to a full 24 hours with no gaps or overlaps. That closure constraint forces internal consistency: you cannot inflate sport time without taking time from something else. Validation studies consistently find diary estimates more accurate than stylized questions, which is why time-use scholars treat the diary as the reference method for measuring how much sport and leisure people actually do.

How many diary days do I need, and should they include weekends?

Because participation varies sharply across the week, a single weekday diary misrepresents typical behavior. Standard practice collects at least one weekday and one weekend day per respondent, and analyses apply day-of-week weights so that the seven days of the week are represented in correct proportion. If the research question concerns individual habitual activity rather than population averages, more days per person are needed to average out day-to-day variability; if the goal is a population estimate, a well-weighted single day per person across a large sample can suffice.

Can the diary measure how intense the exercise was?

Not reliably. The diary excels at capturing what activity was done, for how long, when, where, and with whom, but self-reported intensity is noisy and prone to bias. For physiological intensity -- light, moderate, vigorous -- the diary is best paired with an objective device such as an accelerometer worn over the same days. The diary then supplies the activity type and social context that the device cannot infer, while the device supplies the intensity and energy expenditure the diary cannot, making the two methods complementary rather than competing.
