Flow State Scale-2
Also known as: FSS-2, Jackson & Eklund Flow Scale, Flow State Scale Revised, Dispositional Flow Scale-2
The Flow State Scale-2 (FSS-2) is a 36-item self-report instrument developed by Susan Jackson and Robert Eklund (2002) to measure flow — the state of optimal experience and total absorption — as it occurs in a specific physical-activity episode. It operationalizes Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's nine dimensions of flow: challenge-skill balance, action-awareness merging, clear goals, unambiguous feedback, total concentration on the task, a sense of control, loss of self-consciousness, transformation of time, and the autotelic (intrinsically rewarding) experience. The FSS-2 revised the original Flow State Scale by replacing problematic items, and confirmatory factor analyses across an item-identification and a cross-validation sample showed good fit for both a nine-factor and a higher-order model, with subscale reliabilities between roughly .80 and .92. A companion Dispositional Flow Scale-2 measures the same nine dimensions as a general tendency rather than a single episode.
Key highlights
- Operationalizes Csikszentmihalyi's full nine-dimensional theory of flow, giving both a component profile and an overall score.
- Validated by confirmatory factor analysis across item-identification and independent cross-validation samples, supporting nine-factor and higher-order structures.
- Strong subscale reliabilities (roughly .80 to .92) and an episode-specific design that ties measurement to a concrete performance.
- Paired with a dispositional companion scale, enabling matched study of state flow and trait flow proneness.

When to use it
Use the FSS-2 to measure flow as it occurred in a particular physical-activity or performance episode — for example, after a race, a training session, a competition, or an exercise bout. It suits sport and exercise psychology studies of optimal experience, investigations of how challenge-skill balance and other conditions produce absorption, evaluations of interventions intended to facilitate flow, and research linking flow to performance, intrinsic motivation, and well-being. When the interest is in a person's general propensity to experience flow rather than a single episode, use the companion Dispositional Flow Scale-2, which measures the same nine dimensions as a trait. The FSS-2 is less appropriate for non-physical domains without adaptation, for retrospective measurement long after the episode (where recall degrades), or when only a single global flow rating is needed and the full nine-dimensional instrument is unnecessary overhead; short forms exist for the latter case.
Strengths & limitations
- Operationalizes Csikszentmihalyi's full nine-dimensional theory of flow, giving both a component profile and an overall score.
- Validated by confirmatory factor analysis across item-identification and independent cross-validation samples, supporting nine-factor and higher-order structures.
- Strong subscale reliabilities (roughly .80 to .92) and an episode-specific design that ties measurement to a concrete performance.
- Paired with a dispositional companion scale, enabling matched study of state flow and trait flow proneness.
- Retrospective self-report after the episode is vulnerable to recall and reconstruction biases, and flow is hard to report while it is happening.
- Some dimensions — notably action-awareness merging and loss of self-consciousness — are conceptually subtle and can be less reliably measured.
- Developed and validated in physical-activity contexts, so use in other domains requires adaptation and revalidation.
- The nine factors are correlated and a strong global factor is present, which can blur the distinctiveness of individual subscales.

Frequently asked
What are the nine dimensions of flow the FSS-2 measures?
Challenge-skill balance, action-awareness merging, clear goals, unambiguous feedback, total concentration on the task, sense of control, loss of self-consciousness, transformation of time, and the autotelic (intrinsically rewarding) experience. These come from Csikszentmihalyi's theory; the FSS-2 measures each with four items. The first three are often regarded as conditions that facilitate flow, and the remaining six as features of the flow experience itself.
How is the FSS-2 different from the Dispositional Flow Scale-2?
They measure the same nine dimensions but with different referents. The FSS-2 is a state measure: respondents complete it after a specific activity and report the flow they experienced in that episode, with past-tense items. The DFS-2 is a trait measure: respondents report how often they generally experience each dimension in their activity, capturing a disposition to enter flow. Use the FSS-2 for episode-specific flow and the DFS-2 for an individual's general flow proneness.
Should I report the nine subscales or a single flow score?
Either or both, depending on the question, because Jackson and Eklund validated both a nine-correlated-factor model and a higher-order model with one global flow factor. Report the nine-dimension profile when you want to know which conditions of flow were present or absent; report the overall score when you want a single index of how much flow was experienced. Many studies report both, and a short core-flow form exists when only the overall state is needed.
