Brokerage Analysis

Gould-Fernandez brokerage analysis classifies the intermediary positions actors occupy in a network. For every two-path in which an actor v sits between a source i and a target j, the analysis labels v's role according to the group memberships of the three actors, yielding five distinct brokerage types — coordinator, itinerant broker (consultant), gatekeeper, representative, and liaison. Counting how often each actor plays each role reveals who mediates within groups, who controls access across group boundaries, and who bridges otherwise separate communities.

When to use it
Use Gould-Fernandez brokerage analysis when actors belong to meaningful groups and you want to characterize how individuals mediate flows within and across those group boundaries, distinguishing internal coordination from boundary-spanning roles like gatekeeping and liaison. It is ideal for studying intermediaries in organizations, markets, and inter-group relations. It requires a directed network and a categorical partition. It is descriptive of position, not a model of outcomes; raw counts must be normalized against a baseline; and it presumes the group partition is substantively meaningful. For the cohesion-versus-bridging value of brokerage, pair it with structural-holes analysis.

What are the five brokerage roles?
Coordinator: broker mediates between two members of their own group. Itinerant broker (consultant): broker is an outsider mediating between two members of another single group. Gatekeeper: broker mediates an inflow from an outsider to a member of the broker's own group. Representative: broker mediates an outflow from their own group to an outsider. Liaison: broker, source, and target all belong to three different groups.
How does brokerage analysis differ from betweenness centrality?
Betweenness centrality counts shortest paths through a node without regard to group membership, giving one global score. Gould-Fernandez brokerage counts local two-paths and classifies each by the groups of the three actors, distinguishing five role types. Brokerage analysis is group-relative and typological; betweenness is a single structural measure.
Why standardize the brokerage counts?
The expected number of two-paths of a given role depends mechanically on the sizes of the groups and the density of the network. Comparing raw counts would conflate genuine brokerage with these structural artifacts. Standardizing against a random-network expectation yields z-scores that reveal whether an actor brokers more than would be expected by chance.
