The minimal group paradigm is an experimental procedure, introduced by Henri Tajfel and colleagues in 1971, that strips intergroup conflict down to its barest possible cause: mere categorization. Participants are sorted into two groups on a trivial or random basis (for example, an alleged preference for one painter over another, or a coin toss), never meet other members, gain nothing personally, and then allocate points between anonymous in-group and out-group members using structured reward matrices. The striking and repeatedly replicated finding is that people favor their own group even when the category is meaningless and favoritism brings them no material gain. The paradigm became the empirical cornerstone of social identity theory, demonstrating that the cognitive act of dividing the social world into 'us' and 'them' is itself sufficient to produce discrimination.

Use the minimal group paradigm when you want to isolate the causal contribution of mere social categorization to intergroup bias, free of confounds like resource competition, contact history, or stereotype content. It is the method of choice for testing whether a manipulated variable (self-esteem threat, group status, distinctiveness, identity salience) amplifies or dampens favoritism, and for studying the basic motivational underpinnings of social identity. It is less appropriate when the research question concerns real-world groups with rich histories and material stakes, where the artificiality that makes the paradigm clean also makes it externally limited; in such cases it complements rather than replaces field and survey methods. Why does mere categorization produce favoritism if nothing is at stake?

Tajfel's interpretation, formalized in social identity theory, is that categorizing oneself into a group makes that group part of the self-concept. People are motivated to see themselves positively, and one route is to make their group compare favorably with relevant out-groups. Even an arbitrary label can trigger this search for positive distinctiveness, so participants favor the in-group despite gaining nothing materially. The matrices show this is not mere generosity: people will accept less absolute in-group reward to widen the gap over the out-group.

How do the allocation matrices avoid measuring simple selfishness or fairness?

Each matrix arranges in-group and out-group payoffs so that distinct strategies -- maximum joint profit, maximum in-group profit, and maximum difference in the in-group's favor -- imply different choices that can be statistically separated. Because participants never allocate to themselves, selfishness is excluded by design, and because the strategies are pitted against each other, the analyst can see whether behavior reflects fairness, absolute in-group benefit, or relative differentiation, rather than collapsing them into a single ambiguous score.

Does the paradigm prove that real-world prejudice comes from categorization?

Not by itself. It proves that categorization is sufficient to produce some discrimination under stripped-down conditions, which is a strong claim about a cause but not about its real-world magnitude. Actual prejudice involves history, competition, stereotypes, and emotion that the paradigm deliberately removes. The contribution is to establish categorization as a genuine, independent ingredient, which theory and complementary field research then situate among the many forces driving intergroup conflict.
