The Day Reconstruction Method (DRM), introduced by Kahneman, Krueger, Schkade, Schwarz, and Stone in 2004, is a technique for measuring how people experience the activities of their daily lives without the burden of real-time sampling. Respondents systematically reconstruct the previous day, dividing it into a sequence of episodes -- like scenes in a film -- and report for each episode what they were doing, where, with whom, and how they felt. By anchoring recall in concrete, ordered episodes, the method reduces the memory biases that plague global retrospective reports while approximating the affective information obtained from experience sampling. The DRM yields duration-weighted measures of experienced well-being, such as net affect and the U-index (the proportion of time spent in an unpleasant state), and reveals how feelings vary across activities and contexts. It became a key tool for studying experienced (as opposed to evaluated) well-being and the affective texture of everyday life.

When to use it

Use the Day Reconstruction Method when you want to measure experienced (in-the-moment) affect and time use across daily life with far less participant burden than continuous experience sampling, and when duration-weighted well-being or activity-level affect profiles are the target. It is well suited to studies of well-being, time use, and the emotional impact of activities and contexts in large samples. It is less appropriate when you need true real-time data unaffected by any recall (where experience sampling is superior), when memory for the prior day is unreliable, or when momentary physiological coupling is required. The reconstruction must be administered carefully, since the validity of the affect estimates depends on faithful episodic recall.

How does the DRM differ from experience sampling?

Experience sampling collects reports in real time, prompting participants at multiple moments during the day, which minimizes recall bias but is burdensome. The DRM instead has people reconstruct the previous day episode by episode the next day, approximating momentary experience with far less burden. The DRM trades a small amount of recall fidelity for much greater practicality, especially in large surveys.

What is the U-index?

The U-index is the proportion of time a person spends in a predominantly unpleasant state, where an episode counts as unpleasant if its strongest emotion is a negative one. Because it is duration-weighted and based on an ordinal comparison of emotions, the U-index is robust to scale-use differences across people and provides a simple population-level summary of experienced misery.

Why is duration weighting important?

People spend very different amounts of time in different activities, so a simple average of episode affect can overweight brief, salient moments. Weighting each episode's affect by its duration ensures the day's emotional balance reflects how time was actually spent, revealing that long but mildly unpleasant activities can matter as much as short intense ones for overall experienced well-being.
