Bystander Intervention Paradigm

The bystander intervention paradigm, pioneered by Latane and Darley in 1968, experimentally demonstrates the bystander effect: the counterintuitive finding that individuals are less likely to help in an emergency when other people are present. In their classic studies a participant encounters a staged emergency -- smoke filling a room, a person apparently having a seizure, or a fall -- either alone or in the company of others (sometimes passive confederates). The dependent measures are whether and how quickly the participant intervenes. Helping reliably declines, and slows, as the number of bystanders increases, an effect Latane and Darley explained through diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and audience inhibition. They formalized the path to helping as a sequence of decisions, each of which the presence of others can derail. The paradigm reshaped understanding of prosocial behavior and emergency response.

When to use it
Use the bystander intervention paradigm when studying prosocial behavior and emergency helping, especially how the social context -- number and behavior of others, ambiguity of the situation, group identity, and accountability -- shapes intervention. It is well suited to testing diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and interventions that promote helping. It is less appropriate when helping is non-emergency, planned, or solitary, or when realistic staged emergencies cannot be ethically created; in such cases survey, scenario, or field methods are alternatives. Ethical design requires minimizing distress and deception harm, careful debriefing, and consideration of online or virtual analogues where physical emergencies are impractical.

What is diffusion of responsibility?
When several bystanders are present, the responsibility to act is shared among all of them, so each individual feels less personally obligated to intervene and assumes someone else will. This dilution of felt responsibility is the primary mechanism Latane and Darley proposed for why helping declines as group size increases.
Does the bystander effect always occur?
Not always. Meta-analyses show the effect is robust for ambiguous, low-danger situations but can shrink or even reverse when the emergency is clearly dangerous, the victim is identifiable, or bystanders can communicate. In some real, dangerous public conflicts, bystanders do intervene, so the effect is a strong tendency with important moderators rather than an iron law.
What are the steps in the decision to help?
Latane and Darley proposed that helping requires noticing the event, interpreting it as an emergency, assuming personal responsibility, knowing how to help, and deciding to act. The presence of others can block any step: distraction reduces noticing, others' calm produces pluralistic ignorance that distorts interpretation, and group presence diffuses responsibility, so intervention fails at one of these junctures.
