Surname-based mobility analysis estimates how strongly social status is inherited across generations without linking a single parent to a single child. Developed by Gregory Clark, it exploits the fact that surnames cluster: certain names were borne disproportionately by elites, others by the poor. By tracking how over-represented or under-represented a surname group is among elites, university graduates, physicians, attorneys, the wealthy, across successive generations, one observes how fast that group's relative status regresses toward the population mean. The speed of regression yields an estimate of underlying intergenerational persistence, conventionally denoted b. Clark's striking and contested finding is that this group-level b is far higher, around 0.7 to 0.8, than the 0.3 to 0.5 typically found by conventional parent-child studies, implying that the deep, latent component of social status is far stickier than single-generation correlations suggest. The method extends mobility measurement into eras and places where individual linkage is impossible.

Use surname analysis when individual parent-child linkage is impossible or impractical but named elite lists, universities, professional registers, probate, exist across multiple generations, and when you want to estimate long-run, multi-generational status persistence rather than a single-generation correlation. It excels at very long horizons and at comparing persistence across countries and centuries. It is also valuable as a cross-check on linkage-based mobility estimates. It is inappropriate where surnames are not informative about ancestry (highly common names, recent name changes, patronymic systems) or where elite lists are unrepresentative. It measures group-level, not individual, mobility, and conclusions must respect that distinction.

Why is the surname b higher than conventional estimates?

Clark argues that conventional single-generation correlations are diluted by transitory noise, luck, measurement error, idiosyncratic outcomes, which surname grouping averages away, exposing a slow-moving latent status. Critics counter that aggregation can mechanically inflate persistence and that selection into elites and changing name distributions bias the estimate upward. The gap between the roughly 0.75 surname b and conventional 0.3-0.5 figures is the method's central, unresolved controversy.

Does this measure individual mobility?

No. It measures persistence at the level of surname groups, the rate at which a group's average status regresses toward the mean. Individual families within a group can move far more than the group average suggests. Interpreting the group-level b as the chance that a particular child inherits a parent's status is a misreading; the method speaks to the durability of group advantage over many generations, not individual trajectories.

When are surnames uninformative?

Surnames fail when they carry little signal about ancestry or status: in populations dominated by a few very common names, where patronymic systems reassign names each generation, or where widespread name changes (through marriage, migration, or assimilation) break the link between name and lineage. In such settings relative representation no longer tracks a coherent descent group, and the persistence estimate loses its meaning.
