Its signature elicitation tool is the hierarchical mapping technique, in which respondents place the people important to them into three concentric circles around a focal self, with the innermost circle reserved for those so close that life without them is hard to imagine. From this map an analyst codes the convoy's structure, composition, and the support functions its members serve, distinguishing aid, affection, and affirmation. The approach yields a person-centered, qualitative-plus-quantitative portrait of social embeddedness that complements count-based scales. Use convoy mapping when you want a rich, person-centered picture of an individual's personal network and the support it provides, rather than a single summary count, and when the subjective meaning of relationships and their change over the life course are central to your question. It suits in-depth interviews, mixed-methods studies of aging and support, and longitudinal designs that track how networks reconfigure around transitions like widowhood, retirement, or caregiving. It is also valuable when you need to separate the stable emotional core of a network from its more volatile periphery, or to examine reciprocity and the specific functions ties serve. It is less appropriate for very large-scale surveys where the interactive mapping task is too costly, for purely structural questions that a brief scale like the LSNS answers more efficiently, or where standardized cutoffs and quick screening are the goal. Because the elicitation is interviewer-administered and partly qualitative, it demands trained administration and a coding scheme to ensure comparability across respondents.

How does the convoy model differ from a social network scale like the LSNS?
A scale such as the Lubben Social Network Scale produces a quick numerical index of network size and contact from fixed questions, ideal for screening and large surveys. The convoy model instead uses an interactive mapping task in which the respondent places network members in concentric circles by closeness, and the analyst then codes structure, composition, and the support functions of each tie. The convoy approach is far richer and more person-centered but also more time-consuming; the two are complementary, with the scale offering breadth and the convoy offering depth.
What do the three concentric circles represent?
The circles represent levels of emotional closeness to the focal person. The inner circle holds the people the respondent feels so close to that it would be hard to imagine life without them, the middle circle holds important but somewhat less close people, and the outer circle holds people who are important but more peripheral. Crucially, placement reflects subjective closeness, not the amount of support a person provides, which is recorded separately. This ordering lets the model distinguish a stable, deeply attached core from a more changeable periphery.
What are the three functions of support in the model?
Kahn and Antonucci defined social support as comprising aid, affect, and affirmation. Aid is instrumental help such as care, money, or practical assistance; affect is emotional support, love, and feeling cared for; and affirmation is agreement, advice, and validation of one's views, decisions, and worth. The model codes which of these functions each convoy member provides to and receives from the respondent. Separating the functions allows researchers to see that ties specialize — a spouse may provide all three, a neighbor mainly aid — and that a network's protective value depends on the mix of functions available.
