Research question formulation is the process of defining clear, focused, and answerable questions that guide a research study. A well-formulated research question specifies what a researcher seeks to investigate, distinguishing between independent and dependent variables (or phenomena), and sets the scope for literature review, methodological design, and data collection. When to use it

Research question formulation is essential at the outset of any study—before literature review, before methodology selection, and before data collection. Use it also when: (1) refining a broad interest into a focused study; (2) reframing a failed or stalled project; (3) conducting a secondary analysis of existing data (formulate a new question specific to that analysis); (4) conducting systematic reviews or meta-analyses (specify inclusion/exclusion criteria via a structured question). Researchers should revisit and refine their question as preliminary reading and expert consultation inform understanding.

What is the difference between a research question and a hypothesis?

A research question is an open-ended inquiry (e.g., 'Does exercise improve sleep quality?'). A hypothesis is a proposed answer or prediction (e.g., 'Regular aerobic exercise will improve sleep quality in sedentary adults'). Your research question guides your investigation; your hypothesis (if you have one) is tested within that investigation. Not all research requires a hypothesis—qualitative or exploratory studies may have only a research question.

How many research questions should a study have?

Typically, 1–3 primary research questions are manageable for a single study. A primary question anchors the investigation; secondary questions explore related sub-topics. Too many questions dilute focus and resources. Multi-study dissertations or large grants may address multiple research questions across separate analyses, each with its own methods and sample.

Can a research question change during a study?

Yes, but document the change. In exploratory or qualitative research, questions may evolve as you learn more about the phenomenon. This is called 'iterative refinement.' However, in hypothesis-driven quantitative studies, post-hoc changes to questions or hypotheses after seeing data can inflate false positive rates. Always distinguish between pre-planned research and exploratory or post-hoc analyses.

What if my question is not answerable with available data or methods?

Reformulate. Either narrow the question to something your resources can address, or expand your access to data/methods (e.g., seek funding, collaborate with other institutions, use secondary data). If neither is feasible, your question may be premature—shelve it for future work when conditions are better.
