Stemmatic Textual Criticism

Stemmatic textual criticism, the method codified by Karl Lachmann and given its classic formulation by Paul Maas in 1958, reconstructs the lost original of a work transmitted in many handwritten copies. Because every act of copying introduces errors, manuscripts that descend from a common defective ancestor share those errors. Maas's insight is that shared errors, not shared correct readings, reveal genealogy: by grouping witnesses according to the significant errors they hold in common, the critic builds a stemma codicum, a family tree of manuscripts rooted in the archetype. M. L. West's 1973 handbook turned these principles into working editorial practice for Greek and Latin texts, including the scriptures transmitted in those languages. The pipeline runs from collation through error analysis to a reconstructed archetype that can be defended reading by reading.

When to use it
Use stemmatic textual criticism when a single work survives in multiple handwritten copies and you need a principled reconstruction of what its lost original said, together with an apparatus that documents the evidence. It is the natural method for scriptures, liturgical texts, and patristic or classical works whose manuscript traditions are reasonably tree-like, with copying flowing from parent to child. The method is most powerful when significant shared errors are abundant and the tradition has not been heavily contaminated by scribes consulting several exemplars at once. It is far less reliable for traditions dominated by contamination or horizontal transmission, for oral or fluid texts that were never fixed, or where only one or two witnesses survive, in which cases a documentary edition or computational and coherence-based approaches are better suited.

Why do shared errors, not shared correct readings, establish genealogy?
A correct reading can arise independently in any number of careful scribes, so two manuscripts agreeing in a correct reading tells you nothing about whether they are related. A distinctive shared error is different: it is improbable that two scribes independently made exactly the same unusual mistake, so the simplest explanation is that both inherited it from a common ancestor. Maas builds the whole method on this asymmetry, using conjunctive errors to bind witnesses into families and separative errors to show that one witness is not descended from another.
What is the difference between the archetype and the author's original?
The archetype is the latest common ancestor of all the surviving manuscripts, the single lost copy from which the entire extant tradition descends. Stemmatics can reconstruct the archetype, but the archetype may itself be many copies removed from the author's autograph and may already contain errors common to every survivor. A faithful critical edition therefore reconstructs the archetype and is honest that bridging the gap from archetype to autograph requires conjecture and historical argument beyond what the stemma can supply.
Why does stemmatics struggle with contamination?
The method assumes each manuscript was copied from a single exemplar, so that descent forms a tree and shared errors map cleanly onto branches. Contamination occurs when a scribe consults several exemplars and mixes their readings, creating a manuscript that belongs to no single branch. Such horizontal transmission produces conflicting patterns of shared error that no tree can represent, which is why heavily contaminated traditions like the Greek New Testament motivated coherence-based and computational alternatives to classical stemmatics.
