The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), developed by Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein in 1983, is the most widely used measure of subjective stress in research and clinical practice. Available in 10-item (PSS-10) and 14-item (PSS-14) versions, the PSS assesses the degree to which individuals perceive situations as unpredictable, uncontrollable, and overwhelming. The PSS-10 is briefer and shows comparable reliability and validity to the PSS-14. Both are widely used. The PSS-10 is preferred in time-constrained settings; the PSS-14 is selected when more detailed assessment or redundancy is desired for specific research questions.

How does the PSS differ from measures of life events (e.g., Life Events Checklist)?

Life events measures enumerate stressors (deaths, job loss, moves); the PSS captures subjective appraisal of stress (how overwhelming, uncontrollable, unpredictable). Two people experiencing identical life events may score differently on the PSS. The PSS is more predictive of health outcomes.

Can high PSS scores reflect normal stress or adaptation to ongoing demands?

Yes. The PSS is sensitive to recently-induced or ongoing stress. Chronically stressed individuals may adapt and show lower PSS scores despite objectively high demands. Conversely, individuals facing new or uncontrollable stressors show elevated PSS. Serial measurement is useful to distinguish acute increases from chronic patterns.

Published normative data exist for working adults (mean ~14–16 for PSS-10), college students (higher, ~17–18), and clinical populations (higher still). Compare individual or group scores to published norms for the appropriate sample.
