Chord type describes the pitches (major, minor, dominant seventh). Harmonic function describes the chord's role in the key (tonic, dominant, etc.). The same chord type can have different functions depending on key and context.
What are common harmonic functions?
In major keys: I (tonic), IV (subdominant), V (dominant), vi (submediant). In minor keys: i, iv, v, VI. Functions describe stability (tonic stable, dominant unstable) and typical progressions (IV → V → I).
