Real-Time Study of Language Change
Also known as: Real-Time Analysis, Trend and Panel Study, Longitudinal Language Change Study
The real-time study of language change observes change directly by comparing comparable data from the same speech community gathered at two or more actual points in time. Where apparent-time analysis infers change from age differences in a single snapshot, real-time study watches the community across the calendar, either by drawing a fresh sample of the same community years later (a trend study) or by re-recording the very same individuals (a panel study). It is the gold standard for confirming that a change has occurred and for distinguishing community-wide generational change from change within individual speakers over their lifespan.

When to use it
Use real-time study when you need to confirm that a change has actually taken place, to measure its rate, or to distinguish change in the community from change within individuals across their lives — questions that apparent-time data can only infer. It is the right design when earlier recordings or surveys of a community exist, or when you can plan a longitudinal study with a deliberate revisit. It is harder to apply when no comparable baseline exists, when the original speakers cannot be relocated for a panel design, or when changes in recording technology, methods, or community composition make the two time points difficult to compare fairly.

This lifespan change is one of the patterns the real-time typology is designed to detect, and it is a key reason apparent-time results need real-time corroboration.
