Discourse Completion Task

The discourse completion task (DCT) is an elicitation instrument widely used in pragmatics to gather data on how people perform speech acts such as requests, apologies, refusals, and compliments. Respondents read short descriptions of situations and write (or say) what they would utter in each, allowing researchers to collect comparable speech-act data across many speakers, languages, and cultures under controlled conditions. It was popularized by the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) of Blum-Kulka, House, and Kasper in 1989.

When to use it
Use a DCT when you need comparable speech-act data from many speakers under controlled conditions — for cross-cultural pragmatics, interlanguage and second-language pragmatics, or studies that systematically vary power, distance, and imposition. It excels when natural occurrences would be too rare or uncontrolled to compare. It is less appropriate when the research question concerns authentic interactional dynamics, turn-taking, or negotiation, where role plays, conversation analysis, or naturalistic recordings are preferable, since DCTs capture offline, idealized production rather than real-time interaction.

Does a DCT capture how people actually speak?
Not exactly. A DCT captures what respondents report they would say in a described situation — offline, reflective, often written production. This typically differs from spontaneous talk in length, directness, and the absence of interactional features like negotiation and repair. DCT data are best treated as a controlled sample of pragmatic knowledge and strategy choice, valuable for comparison, rather than as a record of naturally occurring conversation.
What are the main variants of the DCT?
Beyond the classic open written DCT with a blank for the response, variants include the dialogue-completion form with a rejoinder that anchors the exchange, multiple-choice DCTs that constrain responses to preset options, and oral or computer-animated DCTs that present scenarios audiovisually and collect spoken responses. Each trades off control, naturalness, and ease of coding differently, so the choice follows the research question.
How are DCT responses coded for analysis?
Responses are segmented and classified with a pragmatic coding scheme, most influentially the CCSARP framework, which separates the head act (the core of the request or apology) from supportive moves, codes the level of directness, and tags internal and external modifications such as downgraders and grounders. Reliable, documented coding is essential so that strategy use can be counted and compared across groups and conditions.
