When to use it

Build a thesaurus when you need consistent subject access to a body of content and natural-language searching alone produces too much mismatch between authors', indexers', and users' vocabulary. It is appropriate for specialized databases, archives, digital libraries, and enterprise content where the subject domain is coherent enough to support a controlled vocabulary and where indexing or tagging will be applied systematically. A thesaurus is most worthwhile when recall and precision both matter and when the relationships among concepts — broader, narrower, related — add navigational value. It is less justified for very small or transient collections, for domains so volatile that the vocabulary cannot stabilize, or where full-text search with no conceptual structure already meets users' needs. The investment in construction and maintenance should be weighed against the consistency and retrieval gains it delivers.
