Domain Analysis

Domain analysis is the socio-cognitive research programme proposed by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen in 1995, which holds that the most fruitful object of study for information science is the knowledge domain understood as a discourse or thought community within society's division of labour. Rather than grounding information organization in the isolated mental processes of an individual user, domain analysis grounds it in the shared literature, paradigms, terminology, and social practices of a subject field. Hjørland and Albrechtsen set out eleven complementary approaches — from producing literature guides and special classifications to bibliometric, historical, and epistemological study — and Clare Beghtol's work on literary warrant and consensus showed how a domain's own published discourse supplies the empirical basis for its categories. The method turns the design of classifications, thesauri, and retrieval systems into an evidence-based study of how a community actually thinks and writes.

When to use it
Use domain analysis when you must design, evaluate, or critique an information-organization system — a classification scheme, thesaurus, ontology, indexing policy, search interface, or subject gateway — for a recognizable subject field, and you want that work grounded in the field's actual discourse rather than in generic standards or individual intuition. It is especially appropriate for specialized or scholarly domains with an identifiable literature and community, where terminology, paradigms, and relevance criteria are field-specific. The approach is less suited to highly heterogeneous, ad hoc, or rapidly fluid collections that lack a coherent discourse community, or to purely engineering tasks where no socio-cognitive grounding is sought. Because it is labour-intensive and interpretive, domain analysis is best reserved for settings where the quality and legitimacy of the organization system justify a deep study of the field.

The cognitive view locates the key to information retrieval in the individual user's mental model and information need. Domain analysis, as Hjørland and Albrechtsen argued, holds that this is the wrong primary unit: meaning, relevance, and good categories are social and domain-specific, produced by a discourse community rather than by isolated minds. What role does literary warrant play in domain analysis?
Literary warrant is the principle that a term or class belongs in a knowledge-organization system to the extent that it actually appears in the published literature of the domain. Beghtol showed how this gives domain analysis an empirical anchor: rather than inventing categories, the analyst reads them out of the field's own discourse and measures their warrant by usage. This keeps the resulting classifications and thesauri faithful to how the community writes and thinks, and it exposes where consensus is strong versus where a concept is local to one school.
