Content analysis of treaties is the systematic, rule-governed coding of the text and design features of international agreements — their obligations, precision, delegation, enforcement, flexibility, and substantive provisions — to study how treaties are written and what explains variation in their design. It applies the established content-analysis methodology codified by Krippendorff to the specialized vocabulary of international law and institutions, often organized around frameworks such as the legalization concept of Abbott and colleagues (2000).

When to use it

Use content analysis of treaties when the research question concerns the design, language, or institutional features of international agreements and you need systematic, comparable evidence across many texts rather than close reading of a few. It suits studies of legalization, treaty flexibility and enforcement, the diffusion of treaty templates, and the politics of institutional design. It is less appropriate when the question is about treaty effects on behavior rather than treaty content, when the relevant meaning is too context-dependent to code reliably, or when only a handful of agreements exist, where interpretive case analysis may serve better.

What is intercoder reliability and why report Krippendorff's alpha?

Intercoder reliability is the degree to which independent coders, applying the same codebook, assign the same codes. Krippendorff's alpha measures agreement corrected for the agreement expected by chance, works across any number of coders and several levels of measurement, and handles missing data — which is why it is the preferred statistic for demonstrating that a treaty coding scheme is reproducible rather than idiosyncratic.

Can treaty content analysis be automated?

Increasingly, yes, in part. Computational text-analysis and natural-language-processing tools can scale the assembly and preliminary coding of large treaty corpora, and supervised classifiers can replicate some human codes. But constructs like delegation or precision often require legal judgment, so automated coding is typically validated against, and combined with, human coding rather than replacing it outright.
