The von Thünen model is the founding theory of agricultural land use, explaining how the pattern of farming around a market emerges from transport costs and land rent. Set out by Johann Heinrich von Thünen in his 1826 work Der isolierte Staat, it imagines an isolated city on a uniform plain and shows that the rent a farmer can pay for land falls with distance to the market, so different crops and farming intensities sort themselves into concentric rings around the city. It is the earliest formal model in economic geography and the ancestor of bid-rent and urban land-use theory.

What are the classic von Thünen rings?

In the original formulation the innermost ring is intensive market gardening and dairying — perishable, bulky goods that must reach the city quickly and cheaply. Next comes forestry, which von Thünen placed near the city because firewood and timber were heavy and costly to haul in his era. Beyond that lie progressively more extensive arable systems (rotation cropping, then grain under fallow), and finally livestock ranching at the margin, where land is cheapest and the product can walk or travel cheaply to market.

How does the von Thünen model relate to bid-rent analysis?

Bid-rent analysis is essentially von Thünen's logic transplanted from the rural plain to the city. Where von Thünen ranked crops by the rent they could pay at each distance from the agricultural market, Alonso's 1964 bid-rent model ranks urban land uses — commerce, then residence by income — by their willingness to pay for land at each distance from the city centre. Both derive concentric zones as the upper envelope of competing bid-rent curves, with the steepest bidder winning each ring.

Is the von Thünen model still relevant given modern transport?

As a literal map of where crops grow, much less so: refrigerated trucking, containerized shipping, and global trade have collapsed many of the freight-cost differences that produced the rings. But the underlying principle — that location rent reflects accessibility and transport cost — is more relevant than ever, especially in urban economics, where it explains why land near city centres commands higher rents. The model endures as a way of thinking rather than as a literal land-use forecast.
