Time geography is a framework, introduced by Torsten Hägerstrand in 1970, that represents human activity as continuous trajectories through a joint space-time coordinate system rather than as static points on a map. Each individual traces a space-time path through the 'space-time aquarium', and the set of all locations that can be reached and returned from within a time budget forms a space-time prism, whose spatial footprint is the potential path area. The framework grounds accessibility and mobility in the inescapable fact that people can be in only one place at a time and that movement consumes both space and time.

Use time geography when individual time budgets, fixed commitments, and scheduling — not just spatial proximity — govern who can reach what, as in studies of daily mobility, activity participation, gender differences in access, or the reach of transport-disadvantaged groups. It is the appropriate framework when you need person-based rather than place-based accessibility, when fixed anchor points (home, work, school pick-up) structure the day, and when you have data on the timing and location of activities. It is less useful when only aggregate, place-to-place accessibility is required, when individual schedules are unknown, or when the question concerns long-run locational equilibrium rather than the rhythm of daily life.

What is the difference between a space-time path and a space-time prism?

The path is what an individual actually did — the realized continuous trajectory of their location over time. The prism is what they could have done — the envelope of all locations reachable between two fixed points given a time budget and travel speed. The path is a single curve; the prism is the volume of feasible paths around it, and its map shadow, the potential path area, defines the reachable region.

How does time geography differ from gravity-based accessibility analysis?

Gravity accessibility is place-based and time-blind: it scores a location by the impedance-weighted opportunities around it, the same for everyone at that location. Time geography is person-based and time-aware: it scores an individual by the opportunities falling inside their personal space-time prism, which depends on their fixed commitments, time budget, and the hours opportunities are open. Two residents of the same building can have very different time-geographic access.

What are capability, coupling, and authority constraints?

They are Hägerstrand's three limits on where a path can go. Capability constraints are physiological and physical — the need to sleep and eat, and finite travel speed. Coupling constraints require being in a specific place at a specific time to join other people or activities. Authority constraints are rules of access, such as opening hours, ownership, and legal prohibitions, that make certain regions of space-time unavailable regardless of one's ability to reach them.
