Statistical analysis estimates average relationships across many cases using cross-case variation. Process tracing examines within-case evidence to determine whether a mechanism actually operated in a specific instance. What is a smoking-gun test?
A smoking-gun test offers evidence that, if found, strongly confirms a hypothesis because the evidence is very unlikely under rival explanations. Its absence, however, does not eliminate the hypothesis, since the smoking gun need not always be left behind. It contrasts with a hoop test, where failing the test eliminates a hypothesis but passing only keeps it alive without confirming it.
Can a single case really support a causal claim?
Yes, when the within-case evidence is rich enough. Process tracing draws inferential strength not from repetition across cases but from the diagnostic weight of observations within one case. A decisive piece of evidence, strongly predicted by one hypothesis and improbable under all rivals, can substantially confirm an explanation, much as a single fingerprint can identify a culprit without a sample of many crimes.
