Aggregative Parish Register Analysis

Aggregative parish register analysis is the foundational technique of English historical demography, compiling the simple monthly and annual counts of baptisms, marriages and burials recorded in parish registers into continuous long-run series. Unlike family reconstitution, it does not identify individuals; it treats the registers as a barometer of the community's vital pulse. By assembling such counts from hundreds of parishes, Wrigley and Schofield built national series stretching back to 1538, the year English parochial registration began. From the relation between baptisms and burials one infers natural increase or decline; sharp spikes in burials betray mortality crises from famine or epidemic; the monthly distribution of events exposes the seasonality of marriage, conception and death. The method is comparatively economical, scalable across many parishes, and supplies the raw input series that inverse projection later transforms into full reconstructions of population size and structure.

When to use it
Reach for aggregative analysis when you need long-run, broad-coverage demographic trends and you have many parish registers but lack the resources—or the kin-rich detail—for full reconstitution. It is ideal for charting population growth and decline over centuries, dating and mapping mortality crises, and characterising the seasonality of marriage, conception and death. It is also the necessary first step in assembling the national birth and death series that inverse projection consumes. Use it when individual-level rates are not required and when the scale of the question favours breadth over depth. It is less suitable where you must measure age-specific fertility or mortality, for which nominative linkage is indispensable.

Why correct the raw counts at all?
Registers undercount true vital events because some were lost, clerks lapsed, and dissenters baptised outside the Church of England, with the shortfall worsening in the later eighteenth century. Uncorrected, the series would understate births especially and distort the trend. Coverage corrections inflate the counts to approximate actual events, making movements in the series reflect demography rather than the vagaries of record survival.
How are mortality crises identified?
By flagging periods when burials rise sharply above their local expected level, conventionally beyond a multiple of the standard deviation above a moving average of normal years. The magnitude, duration and geographic clustering of the excess then distinguish a regional epidemic from a nationwide subsistence crisis. This lets historians map where and when plague, influenza or famine struck across the early modern period.
How does it feed inverse projection?
Inverse projection requires national time series of births and deaths plus a starting population. Aggregative analysis produces exactly those corrected birth and death series. The two methods are therefore complementary: aggregation supplies the aggregate flows, and back projection works backward from a later census to infer the population sizes, age structures and life expectancies consistent with those flows.
