Time-use analysis measures how people allocate their time across activities — paid work, unpaid domestic and care work, leisure, sleep, and more — typically using detailed daily diaries collected through time-use surveys. It is the foundational method for making visible the unpaid and care work that gross domestic product ignores, and it is central to gender studies because it quantifies the unequal division of household labor between women and men.

When to use it

Use time-use analysis when you need to know how people actually spend their time rather than how much they earn or produce — especially to capture unpaid domestic and care work, leisure, and the gendered division of labor. It is the right tool for studying the second shift, the impact of care responsibilities on labor supply, and the well-being effects of time pressure. It is less suitable when only a single activity's duration is needed (a direct question may suffice), when the population cannot reliably complete diaries, or when very rare activities require impractically large samples.

Why use a diary instead of just asking how many hours people work or do chores?

Stylized questions ('How many hours per week do you usually spend on housework?') suffer from recall error, rounding, and a tendency to overstate, and they cannot enforce that all activities sum to the day. Diaries, which record activities sequentially as they occur or are recalled for a specific day, are generally more accurate and internally consistent, which is why time-use surveys rely on them.

How is unpaid care work captured if people do several things at once?

Multitasking is a known challenge. Time diaries usually record a primary activity and, where the design allows, one or more secondary activities. Passive supervisory childcare in particular is often done alongside cooking or cleaning, so surveys that omit secondary activities or a separate 'who was in your care' field tend to undercount it — a bias that disproportionately understates women's care burden.

How many diary days are needed per respondent?

A single day captures population averages well when the sample is large and days of the week are balanced and weighted, but it cannot describe an individual's typical week. Studies interested in within-person regularities or rare activities collect multiple days (for example one weekday and one weekend day), trading higher accuracy against greater respondent burden.
