Gender attitude surveys are population-based instruments that measure how a society views the roles, rights, and relations of women and men. Unlike clinical or laboratory scales, they are fielded to probability samples and embedded in large programmes such as the World Values Survey, the International Social Survey Programme, and the General Social Survey, using standardized items so that gender ideology can be estimated for whole populations and compared across countries and over decades.

The major cross-national programmes are ideal for comparative work because their items and designs are harmonised. They are less suitable for fine-grained psychometric or experimental questions, where dedicated scales or lab tasks are better, and cross-national comparison demands careful attention to translation and measurement equivalence.

A scale, such as the Sex-Role Egalitarianism Scale, is a validated multi-item instrument optimised for measurement precision, often used with convenience or clinical samples. A gender attitude survey fields a usually shorter, standardized item battery to a probability sample so that estimates represent a whole population and can be compared across countries and time. The survey trades some psychometric depth for representativeness and comparability.

Why is measurement invariance important in cross-national comparison?

Comparing gender attitudes across countries assumes the items mean the same thing everywhere. Translation, cultural framing, and response styles can break that assumption, so a higher mean in one country might reflect different item functioning rather than genuinely different attitudes. Testing for measurement invariance — for example with multi-group confirmatory factor analysis — checks whether the items are comparable before national means are compared, guarding against spurious cross-cultural differences.

Do I need survey weights to analyse this data?
