When to use it

Use educational action research when a practitioner needs to investigate and improve a specific problem within their own classroom, school, or educational programme, and when context-specific, immediately applicable knowledge is the priority. It is well suited to curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, inclusive education challenges, and professional development initiatives. The method requires that the researcher has direct access to the site and participants over an extended period (typically one term or more). Do not use educational action research when the goal is to produce findings statistically generalizable to a wider population — for that, experimental or survey designs are more appropriate. It is also unsuitable when the practitioner lacks the time or institutional support to sustain iterative cycles, or when the research question requires controlled conditions that a live classroom cannot provide.

Do I need ethics approval to conduct educational action research?
