Social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) evaluates the social and socio-economic impacts of products and services across their entire life cycle, from raw-material extraction through manufacturing, use, and disposal. It mirrors the four-phase structure of environmental LCA, goal and scope definition, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation, but replaces physical pressures with effects on people, organized by stakeholder categories such as workers, local communities, society, consumers, and value-chain actors. The approach was codified in the 2009 UNEP/SETAC Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products, edited by Catherine Benoit and Bernard Mazijn, which established stakeholder categories, impact subcategories, and the use of performance reference points to judge whether a measured condition is good or bad. Benoit and colleagues' 2010 article situated the guidelines within the broader life-cycle sustainability assessment agenda and explained their just-in-time arrival as supply-chain social concerns rose. Because many social indicators are qualitative and depend on conduct rather than throughput, S-LCA leans on activity variables such as worker-hours to connect indicators to the functional unit. It complements environmental LCA and life-cycle costing to round out a three-pillar sustainability assessment.

When to use it

Use social life cycle assessment when you need to understand and compare the social and socio-economic consequences of products or supply chains across their full life cycle, particularly to identify social hotspots, support responsible sourcing, or complete a three-pillar life-cycle sustainability assessment alongside environmental LCA and life-cycle costing. It suits situations where stakeholders, workers, communities, consumers, and value-chain actors, can be characterized at the process level and where credible performance reference points exist. S-LCA is most defensible when paired with stakeholder consultation and good site-specific data, and it is well used for due-diligence screening, eco-social labeling, and comparing sourcing options. It is less appropriate when only highly aggregated or secondary data are available, since results then rest on generic sector assumptions, and it should not be reduced to a single score when the goal is to inform action on specific social conditions.

How does S-LCA differ from environmental LCA?

S-LCA borrows the four-phase ISO LCA structure of goal and scope, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation, but its impact categories concern people rather than the biophysical environment. Instead of emissions and resource use, it assesses subcategories like fair wages, child labor, health and safety, and community engagement, organized by stakeholder groups. A key methodological difference is that environmental impacts scale with physical throughput, whereas social conditions reflect organizational conduct, so S-LCA introduces activity variables such as worker-hours to relate social findings to the functional unit. The two are designed to be complementary parts of a broader life-cycle sustainability assessment.

What is a performance reference point and why does it matter?

A performance reference point is a benchmark against which an inventory indicator is judged, such as a legal minimum wage, an International Labour Organization convention, or a sector average. It matters because raw social data are not interpretable on their own: a wage of a given amount is good or bad only relative to local cost of living and standards. By comparing the measured value to the reference point, S-LCA turns the indicator into a normalized social-impact score signaling better or worse than acceptable. Because the reference point embeds a value judgment about what is acceptable, its choice strongly shapes the result and must be made transparently.

Why are activity variables like worker-hours used?

Environmental flows scale naturally with how much is produced, but social conditions are properties of how organizations behave, not of physical output, so they cannot be summed across processes the same way. Activity variables solve this by weighting each process according to a measure of human involvement, most commonly worker-hours, on the premise that social impacts on workers accumulate with the labor a process demands. Normalizing these variables across the life cycle yields weights that let process-level social scores be aggregated and attributed to the product. The activity variable is therefore the device that connects conduct-based social indicators to the functional unit.
