How does Q-methodology differ from a conventional survey (R-methodology)?
The difference is what gets correlated. Conventional survey research ('R-methodology') correlates variables (items) across a large sample of people to find how traits covary in a population. Q-methodology inverts this: it correlates people across a set of statements, so the emergent factors are clusters of individuals who share a viewpoint. As a result Q reveals the distinct perspectives present in a debate and reconstructs each as a coherent whole, whereas R estimates how prevalent attitudes are. Q also uses a purposive rather than a probability sample and a forced-distribution ranking instead of independent item ratings, which is why Q claims to characterize the structure of subjectivity, not its population frequency.
Why use a forced quasi-normal distribution for the Q-sort?
The forced distribution requires participants to rank statements relative to one another on a fixed grid, placing only a few at the strong-agree and strong-disagree extremes and more toward the middle. This compels genuine trade-offs and prevents people from simply agreeing or disagreeing with everything, yielding a holistic configuration that expresses what they truly prioritize. It also standardizes the data so that sorts can be compared and factor-analyzed cleanly. Can Q-methodology tell me how many people hold each environmental discourse?
No, not in a population sense. Because Q uses a purposive participant set chosen to span the range of perspectives rather than a probability sample, the number of people loading on a factor reflects the design of the study, not the prevalence of that discourse in society. Q-methodology answers 'what are the distinct perspectives, and what does each consist of?' rather than 'how common is each?' If you need prevalence estimates, you would follow a Q study with a representative survey that operationalizes the discovered discourses as items. Reporting factor sizes as if they were population proportions is a common and serious misuse of the method.
