Optimal Power Flow

Also known as: OPF, Economic Dispatch with Constraints

OriginatorJean CarpentierYear1962Sources3Related methods10

Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is a fundamental optimization framework for computing the most economical and secure operating point of an electrical power system. Introduced by Jean Carpentier in 1962, OPF minimizes operational costs (fuel, losses, or other expenses) while satisfying physical and operational constraints. Modern electric grids depend on OPF for real-time economic dispatch, security analysis, and planning, making it one of the most important problems in power systems engineering.

Key highlights

  • Mathematically rigorous; accounts for full network physics and all operational constraints
  • Produces globally optimal or near-optimal solutions depending on solver used
  • Provides sensitivity information (locational marginal prices, constraint shadow prices)
  • Supports multiple objectives (cost minimization, loss minimization, emission reduction)

When to use it

Use OPF for all real-time and day-ahead dispatch decisions, security assessment, and operational planning. Required when transmission congestion, voltage constraints, or network losses significantly impact economics. Less suitable for contingency screening (too slow) or long-term planning (use economic dispatch with net-work model instead). Requires accurate cost data and network models.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Mathematically rigorous; accounts for full network physics and all operational constraints
  • Produces globally optimal or near-optimal solutions depending on solver used
  • Provides sensitivity information (locational marginal prices, constraint shadow prices)
  • Supports multiple objectives (cost minimization, loss minimization, emission reduction)
Limitations
  • Computationally expensive for large systems; real-time OPF may run in 5-15 minutes for a large utility
  • Highly nonlinear and non-convex; no guarantee of global optimality with standard solvers
  • Requires accurate and up-to-date network parameters, cost functions, and forecasts
  • Infeasibility is possible; a feasible operating point may not exist given constraints

Frequently asked

Why is OPF infeasible for my system?

Infeasibility usually stems from contradictory constraints: insufficient generation reserves, network congestion, or unrealistic voltage or reactive power limits. Relax the least-critical constraint or increase generation/storage capacity.

What is the difference between OPF and Economic Dispatch?

Economic Dispatch assumes fixed voltage and ignores network losses; OPF optimizes voltages and includes loss penalties. OPF is more realistic but computationally harder.

How long does OPF take to solve?

For a typical 5000-bus system, interior-point methods solve OPF in 1-5 seconds. Real-time ISO applications may allow 5-15 minutes. Very large systems (>100k buses) may require decomposition or approximation.

Can OPF optimize renewable ramp rates and reserve requirements?

Yes, with extensions. Multi-period OPF includes generator ramp limits and reserves. Chance-constrained OPF incorporates renewable uncertainty explicitly.
