Ecological momentary assessment (EMA), introduced to behavioral medicine by Stone and Shiffman in 1994, is a method of repeatedly sampling people's experiences in real time and in their natural environments rather than relying on retrospective questionnaires. Applied to disability research, EMA captures momentary, disability-relevant states — pain, fatigue, mood, symptom interference, and participation in daily activities — as they occur, typically through prompts delivered on a smartphone many times a day. By measuring experience in the moment and in context, EMA reduces the recall bias that distorts global retrospective reports and exposes the within-person variability and momentary person-environment interactions that aggregate scores hide. Prompts may be signal-contingent (delivered at random or scheduled times), event-contingent (triggered when a defined event occurs), or interval-contingent (at fixed intervals), and the resulting intensive longitudinal data are analyzed with multilevel models that separate within-person dynamics from between-person differences. When to use it

Use ecological momentary assessment in disability research when the phenomenon of interest fluctuates over time and context — such as pain, fatigue, mood, symptom interference, or moment-to-moment participation — and when retrospective questionnaires would blur or bias the picture. It is the method of choice for questions about within-person dynamics (what precedes a flare, how participation varies across the day) and about ecological validity (how symptoms behave in real settings rather than the clinic). EMA suits participants who can respond to brief prompts on an accessible device over one to several weeks and tolerates the burden of repeated sampling. It is less appropriate for stable traits that do not vary momentarily, for outcomes that cannot be reported quickly in the moment, or for populations for whom frequent prompting is infeasible or for whom the device interface cannot be made accessible; in such cases diary or interview methods may serve better.

What are the main sampling schemes in EMA?

Why is accessibility a special concern for EMA in disability research?

EMA depends on participants responding to prompts on a mobile device, so if the device or interface is not usable by people with visual, motor, cognitive, or other impairments, the method silently excludes the very population it aims to study and biases the sample toward those who can use standard interfaces. Accessible design — adjustable formats, alternative input, screen-reader compatibility, and manageable prompt frequency — is therefore essential. Ensuring the assessment itself is accessible is both an ethical requirement and a validity requirement, because excluded experiences cannot be measured.
